Pylos, also known historically as “Navarino”, is a seaside town, located on the west coast of Messene, right across the island of Sfaktiria.

In the southern part of the city is Niokastro, one of the best preserved fortresses in Greece, with a magnificent pine forest and important monuments.

North of Pylos is the lagoon of Gialova (Divari), between Gialova and the bay of Voidokilia. Right above Voidokilia beach is the cave of Nestoras.

The area is an important migratory station for birds and the lagoon of Gialova has been listed under the Natura 2000 network.

The area of Pylos is characterized by rich natural beauty with sandy and pebble beaches, organized or not, right next to the clear blue waters of the Ionian Sea.
In Pylos you will find many pure local products such as olive oil, olives, grapes, raisins, figs and wine. In the square of Pylos, under the huge, centuries-old plane trees, the visitor can enjoy local delicacies. Inside the city, there are alleys worth walking to admire the architecture of the previous century.
Pylos with its history, its authentic beauty and the warm hospitality of its inhabitants, is suitable for quiet summer holidays next to nature.

Pylos’s great historical interest is not only because of its castle, but also because of the naval battle of Navarino that took place in 1827, during the Greek Revolution, whose victorious outcome decided its future in favor of the Greek revolutionaries.
Nowadays, on the island of Sfaktiria (which is not inhabited), there are 3 monuments (Russian, English and French) in memory of the participation of naval forces of Russia, England and France on the side of the Greek forces.

Also, in the central square of Pylos, next to the port, there is a monument in memory of the naval battle of Navarino.
